He is widely considered as one of the greatest players in the history of football. He was the iconic figure of a generation of French players that won the 1998 World Cup and 2000 European Championship. After a brief international retirement, Zidane returned to the national team in 2005 and captained France to the 2006 World Cup Final where he won the Golden Ball as the tournament's most outstanding player.
At club level he won the La Liga title with Real Madrid, two Serie A league championships with Juventus, and a UEFA Champions League, Intercontinental Cup, and UEFA Super Cup each with both aforementioned sides.. Zidane is alongside Brazilian striker Ronaldo, the only three-time FIFA World Player of the Year winners; Zidane also won the Ballon d'Or in 1998. He retired from professional football after the 2006 World Cup.
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has praised new signing Chris Smalling by saying that he is like Rio Ferdianand in most aspects. Smalling came to Old Trafford from Fulham and could make his first appearance for the club in the Community Shield against Chelsea on Sunday.
With Rio Ferdinand still struggling with injury problems the 20-year-old could be an important player for Ferguson this season, and the United boss believes that Smalling could be a great asset for the club in the future.
